How do we navigate the space of conversation when the thing we say is not the thing itself? We can only talk around the subject: at at angle to it or, catching wind and measuring wavelengths, skirting along the edges of things. Over 3 hours we map the territory of our thoughts as they unravel; drawing patterns, sketching landmarks, tracking recursions through mental space. Some paths go unnoticed and we never return to them. Others are well worn over hours or years. As we speak we construct a compass, to instrument which points beyond us, a suggestion where to go.
